traceability of hotmail accounts
Jumpy Guy - 10/6/05 at 12:11 PM

If i send an email using hotmail, is there any way that anyone else can determine where it came from?

ie IP address, or any other details?

i assume that hotmail will know, but is there any other mechanism to find out?

Im talking about personal email, not spam or abusive stuff....

ALL Mail can be traced, unless you are extremely clever.

In fact everything you do on the net is traceable. Your IP address goes with every single packet of data you send.

Even if you dont have a fixed IP address, the ISP logs and retains the info on who was allocated what IP address and when.

Even with a Pay as you go account, ie just a dial in number at premium rate, they log your Phone number and which IP address it was allocated for the sesion. Thats why PAYG accounts insist on Calling Line ID is set up on your Phone.

Simplest way to be really anon, is to hack a wireless connection and spoof their Address. Or Use an Internet Cafe, Pay by Cash and wear a hoody jacket, so their security cameras cant identify you.

It can be done, but unless you are comitting a crime why bother?
