Can anyone help/suggest with my problem please?
I am running XP pro on my lap top SP1. I got an email earlier this evening with .jpg's, the file was large, I knew the sender and no virus's were present. I saved them to 'my pictures', and tried to open them. The programme I use to open them is Microsoft Photo Editor ( Office 2000). The programme 'froze' then refused to open any pictures at all!
I have run 'Avast' and all is clean on the HDD's, I have run 'Spy Bot', nowt wrong there, and I have run 'Ad-Aware', nowt wrong there either.
Any suggestions?....please.

Can you open other pictures OK? Or is it just these?

It's not just that the files are very, very big, and taking ages to load? I've had that happen to me - scanned a slide, ended up with a huge file (30 - 40MB) and then tried to open them with Photoshop. It took about 10 minutes to open each file!

Prob as Dave J says... is it an "older" PC? If so, it sounds like it. Failing that, the .jpg file may be corrupt. Try opening a different picture...

Ta muchly folks, but when I said it wouldn't open pictures, I meant .....any picturesat all....
The Laptop is an Acer, purchased new in February last year it has 512m of sdram and the processor is is an AMD Athalon XP-M 2600+, if thats of any use...
Any more ideas?

is your AVAST software fully up to date (virus signature updates are released about twice a week form alwil) and are you running a complete system scan ?

check in windows explorer that the file type association has not been changed.

have you tried opening the file from within a program like photoshop ? (as opposed to just clicking on the file itself)

Yes Avast is set to update automaticaly, which it does. I do a full system scan every day, with the protection set at high.
I have checked the file extensions and the .jpg's are set to open with photo editor still.
I have tried re-installing photo ed from the office cd to no avail.
I can import the photos to adobe photo shop album, but that is a limited edition, so I assume Photo editor is corrupt? If so, why won't it repair using the control panel options?
Would system restore be an option?

Sounds like a job for system restore

If you still have problems after that, the next thing I'd do would be to uninstall and reinstall the photo editor.

Somewhere along the line you might want to set your Windows folder options to display the full names of files, including extensions, just to see if there's anything peculiar about the files you tried to open, such as them being zip files.

Check out whether the photo software puts a temporary file somewhere - it might be trying to re-open it every time you start it up.

Most software that makes temp files will use the same file name with a different extension, e.g. piccy.jpg becomes temp file called piccy.j~ or similar. Might be worth doing a search for all files using the prefix of the original (in my example, search on "piccy.*".

Just a thought...

Well, somehow I managed to lose the computers ability to open .exe files too!....
so I couldnt get into system restore or help files......eek.

A headache or 3 later, i went into 'folder option' and added the '.exe to open with application' that sorted some of it.....phew
I next went into system restore (help files working again), and did a restore, that 'hung' on me for over 30 minutes, couldn't 'escape' shut down, ctrl alt delete, or owt, so I did the unthinkable and disconnected the battery for a second or two...
It started up again ok....phew (lucky), got to system restore as it told me that the last one was incomplete..(huh!), sorted that out, restarted the computer, and then chose another restore date.
Glad to say that all worked, and Photo Editor is fine.....
All extensions are restored and up and running.

Don't panic it just sounds like your hard disk is full and you have run out of virtual memory, really just a matter of deleting temp internet files, emptying the dust bin and any other garbage and then running a disk fixing tool and getting rid of any .chk files it creates.

Yup you are right!...just checked the disc and it was getting very low!
I have now written some of the photos lurking around the C drive to cd, so that has freed up a surprising amount of space......
Now doing the disc de-clutter to see if I can get rid of more loitering junk!
