there are about 6 billion versions of the iPod, do you know what one exactly?
its a 40 GB one, is it 4th gen?
its got 4 buttons as well as touch wheel
Is there anything on here that might help??
Maybe it need different drivers or something.
Its a 3rd gen.
4th gen have a click-wheel and no buttons
yes if it looks like this then its a 3rd gen or G3 as they're known
I hate those things (IPods)...
If you dont know what up with it, just email Apple.
Usually in the software for the thing you can reset it back to default. Probably called 'initialise' or something similar

PS:
I got me one of these, below (Sony NWHD5). Look better in the flesh. Nice anodised ali case and the usual high Sony quality.
I dont know anyone who has an IPod thats lasted more than a year because something has knackered up on it. And they always feel tacky to me (just to
upset a few people )

This happened to a mates, he gave it to me to have a look at, i found something on the forum on the apple website, you have to reset it by pressing
and holding 2 buttons (menu and play i think), do a search on the website to find out as it was a while ago.
I think its caused by disconnecting the ipod too early. But could be other things.

I have to agree with flak monkey, I personally dont like iPods, better off with an Archos.
Although I have a pair of Thumps!!

Information from my daughter is that the 4th gen Ipod is meant to come up with an apple every time you turn it on, and then you press a button that
sends you to the menu.
We had problems early on but details on the apple web site allowed us to reset it and clear the problem.
Other daughter has a zen seems as good but software seems less prone to problems
tried the 2 button thing it just restarts and the apple comes back
has to be said itunes is easily the best software for transfering music that i have come across.
This happened to mine the other day.
This is what I did with mine

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press
the Menu button.
Then I had to totally wipe it and reinstall everything using the ipod update software.
