Softmodding of XBOX
cerbera - 19/12/05 at 10:35 PM

Im looking at softmodding my XBOX and have found what looks like good instructions on the web. Has anybody done this? If so anything I should watch out for, or baer in mind?

For info Im following the instructions for Softmod installer deluxe v4.

Any insight is appreciated.

I had an Xbox a couple of years back and installed a chip which was fairly straight forward if you can wield a soldering iron. You can network it to your PC and/or stick in a huge hard drive for storage.
Makes games a lot cheaper

Be aware that you may have issues if you want to use XBox Live post modding, they may block your account.

Irrelevant if you don't use live tho'.

Mine softmodded, i'll ask the person who done it and let you know. You cannot use live but can use Kai to play online if you want

If by 'softmod' you mean flashing the bios then i've done about 10.

If you mean softmod just for enabling HiDefenition output and nothing else then I hav'nt done 'just' that yet.

The former requires you to solder 2 (maybe 3) points on the motherboard btw.

LMK what your after doing.

The soft mod method Im looking at doesn't require you to open the box. It uses an save game exploit from either 007AUF, Splinter Cell or Mech Assault.

So are you talking about the font's/audio hack?

I was initially going to use this on my box but because of the chance of it being wiped over with xbox dash updates etc I went and installed a chip. I realise it can work but heard too many horror stories of xbox's getting stuck in the dread 'loop'

If your not wanting to go live then i'd just flash the bios to be honest, roughly same procedure as the AUF or mech assualt procedure but with the 2 points soldered.

Cerbera, have you got a link to the information you found? I havent heard of that method before.

Go here for the online manual for softmod installer deluxe v3. But in the dowload section I have downloaded softmod deluxe v4 which comes with a detailed pdf of what to do. It seems with v4 you can boot your xbox different ways. One way if you want to play Live(but you need to register before you mod your box) another way if you want to use a different dash to play backup games or avi films.

Before I proceeded though, I just wanted to see if there were any pitfalls that I should watch out for.

Well it seems like the install procedure has been made alot easier since the days of 'bert' & ernie'.

If the softmod fits the bill then it's just suck it and see! I was worried about if my first bios flash would be ok but there's no way to tell - you can only double check everythings as it should be.

I'll cross me toes for you....

Cheers

I dont think there is but just to check, can you connect xbox to the pc without a modchip? And transfer the files that way?

Mr G - 20/12/05 at 08:13 PM

You download the special version of the mech assault or 007 agent under fire gamesave (which is really the flashing tool/ftp server in disguise) and put it onto a memory card. You then transfer it from the memory card onto the hard drive. You load 007 or mech assault (they did an upgrade so mech assault didnt work iirc) and then load the save file. This then boots up the flash bios/ftp program on your xbox and you then have network access via a pc to your xbox.

Yes, what i was asking was there a way to do it w/o a memory card, ie direct connection to xbox?

Mr G - 21/12/05 at 01:07 AM

No that's what I was saying, the memory card is the only way to get the file onto the xbox in the first place.
