file transfer on network?

as title really, got my wireless network set up between my laptop and my folks pc downstairs. how do i transfer files between the 2? i can see how to share them but that only allows them to be viewed and not saved to the other pc?

Not quite sure what you mean, can you view each of them in my network places and drilling throught entire network so you can see each others shared hard drive? If you can you can drag into each window or just copy and paste.

All comps have the same workgroup name but differnet static ip's 192.168.0.1 & 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0

Think we need a bit more info on the config of your network.

sounds like a permissions issue to me - it's in the properties of the shared folder (right click - have a poke about)

Assuming you have not got XP, like me you will need an FTP or TFTP server (surf a free one from the WWW ) on one box to set up a FTP connection.

You can then PUT or GET files from the dos prompt.

An alternative is transfer files using MSN messenger as a carrier.

All versions of Windows since Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (circa 1992) allow users to share files and directories and printers across a Windows network without the need to run an FTP server. All that is required is to enable file sharing, then share the directory


Also even if you use FTP for the actual file transfer there are loads of free GUI program (such as FileZilla http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ ) to allow painless file transfer without going near the dos prompt.

Agree with mookaloid on this one also check user names and passwords exist on both PCs.
