My old PC ran Windows 98, new one (about 18 months old) is XP. At the time I copied "everything" I would need to the new PC... except for
some obscure files that were backed up to CD using W98 Backup... Guess what - it is not possible to restore those to Windows XP. I need to get hold of
some files.
Checking out various sites it seems that there is no utility in Windows XP to restore from these old backups (with QIC extension). I found a package
called Backup MyPC which is claimed to be able to do it, but the trial versions certainly doesn't (it says I have to have made the backups with
the same software to be able to restore...)
So - has anyone nearish to me got a PC still running W98 that I could come and use to restore these files? I have a bunch of backups on CDs that need
to go hrough to find the files to restore.
Thanks in hope
Failing anyone near you with a W98 pc an option you could look at is downloading the demo version of VMWare and installing a copy of windows 98 into
that virtual machine and then mounting your cd inside the virtual machine and restoring your files that way then copying them from the virtual
machine.
if you want anymore info on how to do it let me know.

Looks like scotty might be able to help you, and yes you would be able to install w98 onto the virtual machine that VMWare creates and after its all done you can remove VMWare, just like any other program.
The old trap --- not the first time MS have done it --- MS were made aware of the problem at the time of Xps launch they claim " This behavior
is by design."
Would offer the loan of a PC but much too far away.
For anyone wanting a really good genuinely free backup program that will even back up to and restore from your webspace by FTP and SSL and uses Zip
file formats try Cobian Backup
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
I'm a bit far away from you too, but I have a cople of old PCs that run Win98. I used to keep a PC with all the versions of Windows on it so I could boot between different versions if someone I had sold a Pc to had problems with it. If I can help, let me know.
i assume thats a "no thanks" then ?
