Evening all.
I;m getting a randomly occuring strange problem with my PC, and I am a bit baffled as to what might cause it. It is a Shuttle Xpc with an Athlon
xp2800+ processor. It's been working fine for the last two years or so, but twice this month I have booted up, to find an error message waiting
for me when the Bios does its power up checks. It says the Floppy Disc drive has failed.
This is the strange bit, because I have not got a floppy disc drive fitted (and I never have had one fitted either!). On entering the Bios setup, it
seems that it has reverted back to it's default settings, as the Date and time are set to friday 1st January 2003, and a few other settings (like
the temp controlled fan) are not as they should be.
The two times it has occured have both been very random. Today was when I got in from work, (the pc was working fine when it booted up yesterday
morning), and the time it did it before, it had been switched off for about 8 hours.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what might cause this, as I am baffled!
Cheers
Andy
I suspect the Cmos coin cell battery has gone west.
Yep, sounds like the battery on the MB had died. They are usually a little lithium button cell, and easily replaceable.

Ah, that actually makes sense. It would seem like the Battery is on it;s way out, thus not keeping the settings.
I thought the System battery was charged when the system was on though?

Edited for p!$$ poor spelling!

I concur. It's an easy fix. They started putting standard watch batteries onto boards some time ago. I have had several old machines with what
look like giant capacitors soldered to the board - very proprietary and you can never find a replacement.
They're standard batteries, not rechargable.

Brilliant. Thanks for that folks. I'll woop the case off tomorrow, and see what battery I need to get hold of...
Cheers!

Most motherboards use a 3032 or 2032 3 volt lithium cell, but no doubt yours is different!
And yes, they are just normal batteries, so they dont charge.
u2u me your address all shuttles use a 2032, yours for free mate
