Copying DVD's
DorsetStrider - 29/3/06 at 03:59 PM

Hiya All,

I'd liek to back up a few of my DVD's since I recently buggered up my coupling series 2 DVD by dropping it.

Does anyone know of any good (read easy to use) and cheap (read free) dvd ripper/backup software? I have a DVDrw drive in my pc but haven't a clue how to use it.

As always any help, comments, suggestions always very gratefully received.

DVD Shrink is excellent and essential for fitting a dual layer DVD onto a single layer blank (although you can now get dual layer blanks and dual layer DVD burners...).

But DVD shrink wont beat much modern copy protection so increasingly you have to use another piece of software for that. I use DVD fab decrypter which copies the whole disc onto your hard drive removing any copy protection. You can then run DVD shrink on the files on the hard drive (need loads of free hard drive space for all this).

Both Shrink and Fab decrypter are free and super easy to use. I then burn to DVD with Nero.

Not necessary - so dont worry about this if the above is more than enough info for you, but I also use an excellent program called AnyDVD. This runs in the background and removes protection and region coding etc etc on the fly. With AnyDVD running DVD shrink will normally work without problems meaning you dont need to use Fab decrypter, but there are always some discs that are problematic, in which case you have to disable any DVD and resort to decrypter. AnyDVD is commercial software (although I have a naughty program that removes the trial period expiration).

I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD all the time, they are excellent, and I even paid for it it's so good (which is rare!) - though you get a 30 days free trial from the company. AnyDVD always manages to break all encryption, and gets regularly updates with all the latest stuff.
