I've just bought a new hard drive, as I think the old one is on the way out? Any hints on how to instal it in my laptop. I'm running XP. What "GHOST" software would you recommend?

Windows XP has one built in:

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup to start the wizard.

If its not there it'll be on your windows CD, to find it search for Ntbackup.msi and double click it to install.

Ehh..how is it possible to connect 2 internal hard drives on a laptop?

I've connected the drive externally, but the system can't detect it. Unlike a desktop hard drive, I'm not sure how to set the drive as a "slave". The instructions are there, but there are no jumpers? To make matters worse, I've "temporarily" lost my XP CD.

I think your only option is to stick your new drive into a usb drive caddy like THIS but postage seems high, but do a few searches and you should be able to pick something up, then use a bit of software to ghost onto the new drive, something Symantec Ghost or Drive Image, this page has got a few free programs but I haven't tried any of them found HERE

Many thanks Rich. I've got the drive in a caddy, but it's not recognised by Windows. I installed a prog recently called Bellarc Advisor, and this see's it as a usb storage device. Not sure where to go from here?

If you can link the two together you might be able to copy it over. G4U site . I recently used it to copy mine and I also found gparted very useful.
