Hope some one on here can help as this is driving me mad. My home computer, a G5 mac has started freezing and doesn't unfreeze. If left the fans power up and spin at what sounds like full speed until you hold the power button down or pull the power lead out. The light on the front doesn't flash and there are no beeps or other noises. Anyone got any ideas, or how I can check what's happening or get the computer itself to tell me?

Sounds like is trying to do something difficult in the background. Without seeing it its hard to say - but couple of things to check:
- have you got an antivirus program such as norton running??? If so just delete it and chuck it. You've got a mac so make the most of not having to worry about virus's!
- click on the apple sign when the OSx boots up and go down to force quit (is a bit like task manager on PC's) and see if anything is up (it will make it obvious to you if somethings not quite there!)
- empty the disk drive of any CD's dvd's etc sometimes they feel alittle precious about having them there!
I don't suppose its doing it on any particular setup ie mine did it once or twice when running google earth with dashboard at the same time (saw a m8's do the same) solution is to not run them together! If you can give us some more info I might be able to help more.....Oli.

its an imac right not powermac?? and are you intel'd?? and which OSX are you using? (were some big updates the other week)

In all fairness, I've never been 100% which on it is. It says Imac on the back, but when you ask it what it is the processor is a PowerMac G5. Running OS 10.4.8, with out any viral software at all, never have either actually. It freezes whenever it likes. Sometimes it'll run for days, sometimes for about 20 secs. It doesn't matter what's running at all, as sometimes nothing is!

Does it look either like
-cheese grater with seperate monitor (powermac)
-dome with flat monitor attached to it which is on a cran arm (old iMac)
-or one big monitor on a stand with everything in one box (new imac)
Only things I can suggest I'm affraid is either a re-install of the OSX or possibly that its over-heating??!! I've never had the type of problem your on about apart from once with a powerbook which was caused by a strange file my sis downloaded (it was a .exe one and she stopped it half way through) we had to secure empty the trash and eventually reinstall OSx which did solve the problem. Never had it with any of the other macs though.....Oli.

Forgot to say Caber will prob be along shortly and will have any idea I would imagine, as he's even more of a mac nut than I!

Ah, it'll be the new Imac then! Can't imagine it's over heating as it can do it after not having been used for a few days too.

In honesty your probably gonna have to re-install OSx and do an update on it. On the bright side it got the stage with my PC that I'd have to re-install windows every week! Oli.
