Vaio laptop LAN problem
esn163 - 30/12/06 at 06:04 PM

Hi

I'm currently having problems with my Sony Vaio VGN-FS315B's (wired) LAN card playing up. All i get when i connect the network cable is about 4 flashes on the router and a quick attempting to connect, acquiring IP, network cable unplugged routine on in the system tray. Tried with 3 different network cables to make sure but still have same problem. Also checked status of network card and all seems fine.

Anyone got any ideas what the problem could be, had a problem like this or solutions to what to do to sort it out?

Typically the warranty ran out on the 28th

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it's not the router causing the problem?
Try giving your NIC a static ip address and see if you can ping it from itself.
Do the lights (if it has any) on the port (laptop) light up when you connect a cable?

Cheers

Hi

Just tried connecting laptop to desktop bypassing router to make sure it isn't causing the problem but still nothing - used to connect fine at one point like this.

Tried assigning a static IP and pinging itself - worked with wireless connection but nothing through wired.

No lights on port but light flashes on port on router (about once every second) so something must surely be getting through?

Any more suggestions?

Thanks again

You didn't just upgrade the NIC drivers or do a windows update did you?
As it sounds very like driver problems.
If not, the only other option is that the onboard nic has died

I would try changing the nic drivers just in case though.

You can't connect direct between two PCs without a crossover cable.

First thing to do is check the network connection on the laptop is set up to use DHCP for its TCP/IP connection.

Then try pinging the router --- IPScan is a very handy tool for checking TCP/IP problems it is free from http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/

Hi again

Still having problems but now believe it is definitely the port in the vaio. Can't ping to anything from it or from anything to it. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling with new drivers with no change.

Anyone know how difficult would getting to the LAN port would be, is it actually on-board the motherboard on a VAIO or a card of some kind that may be able to be changed or at least checked for any obvious problems?

Failing that thinking about just ordering one of these type things to use instead.

Thanks again

If it is the port the easy way is just get a USB ethernet adaptor --- Belkin do one, quite good kit at a reasonable price.
