Installing programs in Linux

Following on from Marks Linux thread and not wanting to hijack it, how do you add programs to a linux system. I have Mint on at the moment and am experimenting with it and would like to add some games, like the ones that come with O.S. software just to find out how to do it. It isn't connected to the interweb thingy but recognises my usb key so transporting them is easy enough.

It pushes all the old stuff out (Homer)

I've just put Ulteo on the old experimenter upstairs to see what it looks like. I'll get onto tucows and see what they've got for linux downloads and have a play round. Tarballs it is, thanks.

You have to add the Ubuntu repositories to the sources list, then they just install via Synaptic.
