Not for me but my folks back home. They have a Dell Dimension 4400: Pentium 4 2.0Ghz, 256Mb memory, etc.

Looking to upgrade to 512Mb but no idea what type of Ram I need. They cant seem to find the service tag so Dell website isnt much use. Anyone know what motherboard and ram was being used back then?

Any help much appriciated!

Get a glimpse of the stick of ram in there and match it up. It may be better to throw that 256 away and put new 512 in.

Make sure they are not matched pairs though as well.

You need DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 512MB per slot (only two slots though)

Crucial also have a system scanner that will tell you what slots are free and recommend a module type

if youre going to the hassle of upgrading the memory i'd slap in 2x512. It will make a great difference and future proof the machine for a few years.

(but you'll also find 512mb a great improvement)

Good stuff chaps! Im in the middle of ordering them a TFT from ebuyer.com so I may as well just get a single 512mb DDR PC2700 chip while im at it? Cant really squeeze £££ out of them for a Gb chip but could always stick another 512mb in when the time comes (as il have a spare slot)

sorry to inturupt your thread but i to have a ram problem, bought a pc from tesco few months back, called iQon.
it says on the box 256mb ram
but when did a spec check with the aol broadband it only showing 192mb ram.

i dont know that much if anything at all about pc's, so is this acceptable?
also the pc is really slow starting the broadband!

any help would be really appreciated

thanks razman. what you sugest i do? shall i upgrade the ram? can you get ram upgrades for this make of pc?

As in the original post, it is probably best to whip out the old ram and see what spec it is, then either add to it or swap it for larger sims.

careful there, in the days they were selling 2 gig pentium 4s there was still SDRAM about, check exactly what you've got before you buy.

Just hope it isn't RAMBUS ram, cause that stuff is very expensive (easy way to check that is all ram slots are full, the RAMBUS ram required empty slots to be filled with a blank memory module)
