F***ing Popups

I keep getting these stupid popups and i can get rid of them. Iv got adaware software, AVG and my popup blocker (the internet explorer one) is on the highest it goes.
Do i need to buy (or download) popup blocker software (if so what is best?) or is there something else i can do?

Explorer (6 & above I think) has a built in pop up blocker which blocks about 95%, have you got it turned on?

If its random ads, irrelevant of what site you are on you probably have some adware on your computer.

If you are running xp:
Make sure system restore is turned off then boot into safe mode. Run adaware and spybot and hijackthis (you need to know what you are doing with HJT though).

Delete anything that they find and the problem should be fixed.

PS dont forget to download the updates before you boot to safe mode

PPS some sites just have pop-ups, so there may be nothing wrong...

Clear your cookies and run HJT
Better still download and install Firefox

I had this problem recently after re formatting my system.

I finally cured it by downloading Security Task Manager.
After running this I found some adware on my computer,deleted it and the pop ups have now gone.

If you are not behind a router you mght be getting 'messenger' type pop ups which are just targeted at your IP address.

Try disabling the messenger service in services in administrative tools

This sounds like your problem. Messenger is built into Windows for network administrators to send messages to those on their network. I is widely abused with internet popups. Disabling will have no adverse effects

Word of warning on free download anti-popup and anti-adware tools quite a few of the tools on Windows shareware download sites are actually trojan/malware themselves.

Strongly advise before installing anything to check out the reviews of security tools on web sites such as Castle Cops http://www.castlecops.com/
