TGR-ECOSSE - 9/5/07 at 06:24 AM

Looks like might have broken the internet or like me it hasn't woken up yet

Avoneer - 9/5/07 at 06:32 AM

What more do you need ???

Pat...

flak monkey - 9/5/07 at 06:57 AM

Actually, I can only get on LCB.

TGR-ECOSSE - 9/5/07 at 07:01 AM

I had a problem like that and had to delete cookies, history etc all the time. It wasnt a permanent fix but worked sometimes. Cant remember what fixed it permanently. Good luck

flak monkey - 9/5/07 at 07:02 AM

Done all the obvious stuff

coozer - 9/5/07 at 07:26 AM

Using Firefox??

flak monkey - 9/5/07 at 07:32 AM

Yep, same with IE though. Just get a 'cannot find server' error.

ecosse - 9/5/07 at 07:46 AM

Can you ping your DNS server?
If not, thats the problem

If you can try doing an nslookup to somewhere that you can't access and see if it resolves.
If it does try pinging the ip address for that site and using the IP in your browser instead of a url

And if all of that works phone you ISP and shout at them for a bit, it won't get it sorted any quicker but it usually makes you feel a bit better about it

Cheers

Alex

dan__wright - 9/5/07 at 07:51 AM

sounds like a dns problem

flak monkey - 9/5/07 at 07:52 AM

nslookup times out on everything at the moment. As does just pinging anything. It just says that DNS request timed out.

I have a feeling maybe the university dns is playing up. Sometimes you can access other sites, sometimes you cant.

Its a DNS problem at your ISP the DNS system is the intenets phone book it translates www.something.com into a numerical ip address,-- every 24 hrs DNS updates get passed around the web sometimes some glitch happens when an update is in progress and it gets corrupted.

Only way round it to point your PC (or the router) at any other DNS servers on the web -- you can any dns server you can get the address of.

Your ISP’s DNS servers acting crappy and not resolving for you? Or do you just want to check out if your DNS changes are propagating properly? These DNS resolvers should be usable from almost anywhere..

Thanks BT

Seems to have solved at least part of the problem. The only sites that arent working are the university hosted pages now. Looks like there is some network issue on central campus (all internet stuff is handled there)

Some viruses like mucking around with the lhosts file... But that would be machine specific....

Sounds like a DNS issue though.... Perhaps the uni has been victim of DNS cache poisoning....

flak monkey - 9/5/07 at 01:19 PM

All seems to be working now I checked all the obvious stuff, like the cache and hosts file for suspect entries. Nothing present thankfully

Always worrying when the internet stops working at uni though

Thanks for the help

David

When using a connection with unreliable DNS servers a good trick is to install Treewalk DNS on the Windows PC, it acts a as caching DNS server it also can help speed up web browsing a little.
