Setting up new Wireless Modem/Router ???

Why is this so bloody difficult ???

Got a Belkin 802.11g to replace an old phillips one that gave up and for the life of me can't get it to work.

I can talk to it via an ethernet cable from my laptop, but can't get it to talk to the internet.

The ADSL line comes in via a splitter and then straight into the modem/router.

This is for a friend at his house, and I'm back home with Modem to play with it.

Is there anything I can do here?????

Have you set up a network bridge in "network connections"?

If its not talking to the net you need to watch it while connected via the eth, check the status and make sure it negotiated okay and the adsl shows as up.
If not you will get an error that will help you figure out what is going on, there may (I'm dont use Belkin kit so just guessing) also be a diagnostic option on the router admin page that could help

Is it possible that the black lead (from wall to modem) is wired different as I was using the old modems?

Just ccured to me that I had this problem once before in the old days of dial up and internal modems.

Never checked to see if the ADSL light lit up on the new modem - should this light as soon as the ADSL is plugged in?

There should be an ADSL set up menu in the router, or even a quick start. Navigate to it using LAN (often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 or something similar) and there should be an ADSL set up menu in there where you will need to enter all of the ADSL connection settings you get from the provider.

You wont be able to check that it works on your phoneline though, because as far as i know the account is tied to a specific phone line/number so it'll need to go back to your mates.

It is unlikely the lead is wrong, but I have seen stranger!
The adsl light should come on fairly soon after powering on, if it doesn't you will get an error on the status page
