Watercooling pump
Benzine - 3/8/07 at 07:03 PM

I've just finished my new watercooling pc. It uses a pond pump and a mini radiator (the car, not the size). I was going for the locost approach

What ways are there of making a pump quieter? At the moment it's outside my case, most of the noise it makes comes from vibrating the desk it's on. Rubber/foam/sound insulation?

Hmm do I want to admit to owning a water cooled PC on a public forum ...... Oh well I'd try rubber or even better gel pads from saddles, mouse mats n wrist rests. Mines just a badged aquarium pump on rubber feet. If that's not robust enough then silicon filled engine mounts, from the scrappy off course.

Speed controller?

I had thought about that... how would I go about it? At the moment it's a mains cord straight into the pump. I wouldn't know where to start.

Ah ... an AC pump might be tricky. You might be better off changing to a variable speed pump in that case

Tricky means it's possible though doesn't it Couldn't i wire it up to a dimmer switch or something?

Didn't think of that! Certainly worth a go

RE: wiring up a dimmer switch.

The pump being AC, will it draw more amps if you give it less volts and the motor will burn out?

Put mine inside case mounted on rubber feet, switches on through a 12volt relay(240v ac through contacts) been running for about a year with no probs
