I’ve a problem with my computer…..
To start I the computer failed to boot and had a blue screen error which flashed up to fast to read and then rebooted.
I installed a new hard drive because I wanted to try and recover the data, and the computer had windows xp reinstalled.
The computer booted up, but after a few minutes of operating it would just hang.
Now it boots up and hangs on the log in screen.
Is this a software problem or a hard ware problem.
Although it may be a coincidence all the problems started after a power cut which affected all the computers and Sky boxes in the house.

It's funny you should mention this, as I'm sat here on my girlfriends PC after having repaired exactly the same thing! Power cut, then PC
refused to boot, only getting a flash of a blue error screen and then rebooting.
I used an XP CD, booted into the recover console, and used the command chkdsk /p /r to repair her install, and it's running fine now
Can't think why you've got the problem where it hangs though, unless it's maybe buggered the RAM? I had that once before after a power
surge when our TIG machine blew up and fried the garage PC.
It could be a lot of things first thing to check
(1) Check the processor cooling fan is running and keeps running -- also applies to graphics cooling fan and power pack cooling.
(2) Check all memory & expansion cards are properly seated.
(3) Check BIOS settings aren't causing problems
(4) Try booting from a boot able Linux CD.
(5) Try booting in safe mode and running chkdsk /f
(6) Boot in safe mode and try a system restore.
Thanks BT
fans run ok and BIOS fine
Cards Seated well
would not boot from disk (CD)
would not boot in safe mode.
after booting up last night about 4 times it ran ok. this appears to be intermittant so i dont know what it is.
i build this computer 6 years ago and i've replaced/ upgraded parts over the years. i suppose it could be a missmatch somewhere.
cash is tight or i would just buy an new one with extra memory and a good graphics card....
