So if I was to hyperthetically try to log on to my company network on a hyperthetical lappy, what type of hyperthetical LAN card would I
hyperthetically use? One of the usb thingies or a pcmcia card .... hyperthetically speaking

either. i've used both on the same lappie in the past.
i sense this isn't so hypothetical. unless its your frind who wants to do it?
You would still need the the Actual security key. If they've not implemented that then IT Dept/person needs to be sacked
There are tools to get past the security bit as well, but thats another story
yupsz..
wired lan would be by far easyer...
if you are lucky you plugin and you are given the correct settings to browse the net.
saying that if i was admin i woudn't like it
because you do can fuckup the comlete buisness network with a virus etc. etc. or you could cought the blame for it..
Tks
pcmcia cards are getting old now. but if your wardriving
you can get them with an external antenna.9 out of 10 dont have wap enabled.
so just log stright on and then search for the hub and have a mess
.
adam
I'll say 2 things search for Cain and AirPcap.
The world is then your oyster
The company I work for doesn't have wireless, too insecure.
I find PCMCIA cards tend to have better range than USB plug-ins.....
I also think more PCMCIA cards are compatible with AirPCap than the USB plug-ins...

PCMCIA is obsolete provided the laptop has USB 2 (not USB 1) a cheap USB car will work fine.
I have had a few USB dongles and PCMIA cards through my hands and from experience Price & Manufacturer dosen't matter too much some big name
USB dongles have very short range.
I have had good experience with one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/107691/show_product_reviews
D-Link are good if you want a big name, and another cheapy that works well is the Sweex LW058.
One trick to extend range is to use a USB extension cable to get the dongle in a better position for a signal.

??? All this computer stuff is a bit star wars to me but can I ask one question -
My next door neighbour was asking me if I have broadband on a wireless connection which was a bit strange, now do have the BT broadband box but
it's connected into the back of the computer with a cable. But you see the little box had an antenna like a few inches tall and when he asked
about my broad band I suspected the bugger was going to nick my connection so I snapped of the antenna to stop him!
Would doing this prevent the freeloader from using my line???
Even better- leave the aerial attached but wrap it in tinfoil and with a couple of crocodile clips (or bulldog clips if necessary) attach a wire to a
handy earth point (like a radiator). One faraday caged wifi connection
Enabling WEP and WPA is a reasonable idea too. Okay that person could hack (particularly WEP) but it normally needs a bit of traffic on the wireless
router (ie packets to sniff)- if you're not using the wireless capability of the box and you've got WEP installed it'll be more
difficult for them to crack.
An easy option to stop someone nicking your BB is to do this- when you've stopped using your computer at the end of the day switch off the plug
to the router and the computer at the wall. No power going to the router will mean no hacking
