No internet on new XP install?

I have just sucessfully installed XP on my old Dell machine but i can't get an internet connection.

I have done the connection wizard choosing connect to internet thats always on etc but no joy, not even an icon in my network places folder although there was one but it has gone!?!??!

Any ideas chaps?

Might need to reinstall hardware/drivers
