Be broadband --- end of story.
britishtrident - 13/3/08 at 08:26 AM

This story started when I got a bit unhappy with Be when they changed the T&C of the package I was on to down grade me to a 8mb/s connection from the full Adsl2 speed --- in real terms this mean't my connection slowed from 6.8 to 3.4. The irony is I would have happily another 3 quid to stay on the faster rate if only they had asked.

So I shopped around for another ISP and ended up with O2. O2 own Be, the package I signed up for is cheaper than Be and offer more extras and control over my account. Good new was because Be and O2 are in the same group the transfer went very smoothly with no charges.

So I sent my Be router back to Manchester and got an identical router from O2 in err Manchester.

Now the good news although it is supposed to be an 8mbs variable rate connection it is in fact running at ADSL2 24 and giving a download speed of 6.9 :-)

^^ wot does it all mean?

DaveFJ - 13/3/08 at 08:44 AM

go cable

8mb connection and I average 7.9mb download

Humbug - 13/3/08 at 08:49 AM

lucky you... I'm stuck on 1Mbps (max available here, allegedly) and in practice it means about half that

I think we are connected by a long piece of damp string, I pay for 8mb but BT can only provide 512Kb, 2mb would be luxury!

Me too

Paying £17.99 per month for the joy of a 512 kb connection. (Orange)

A very rural exchange I know but a line check shows a possible 2mb for our area.

Orange have claimed they have tried to up the speed.
Somehow, i doubt they have done sod all.

If it were not for my Ebay activitys. I'd be gong back to a dial up connection.

I wish I had the choice of cable! I'm not exactly living in a small town either but I guess the infrastructure cost is just too much with todays beurocracy.

Be 24 should be available in local exchange this month so I'm quite interested in them. So good tip about O2 owning them.

Confused but excited. - 13/3/08 at 03:00 PM

RazMan, I had the same problem with Talk Talk, but kept hounding them ( I sent them a 15 page e-mail with all the times, dates and content of all the phone conversations that I had had with various bodies at Talk Talk). Eventually I got a call from a very nice lady in the CEO's office at the Carphone Warehouse (they own Talk Talk and Onetel), who apologised that I had been mis-sold the package. She organised an ADSL Max package for me from BT, sent me new filters and a router and Talk Talk will pay for it, for the duration of my contract period (18 months). So now I have free broadband running at an average download of 3.8Meg, for 18 months.

CBE, I'll have to try that one! I think BB is one of the most mis-sold products ever They all offer stunning speed downloads but 'forget' to read you the small print which basically says you get whatever you end up with

britishtrident - 14/3/08 at 08:03 AM

I can't understand why ADSL2a isn't the norm in this country it doubles the speed over any given line.

BT were talking about rolling it out at least two years back but seem to have forgotten about it.
Only a couple of suppliers currently offer ADSL2

You guys need to check out www.fast.co.uk

They are on the more expensive side but as always you get what you pay for.
Customer service will not be bettered by anyone, this I am certain.

No throttling (?Traffic Shaping)at peak times like 99% of ISPs seem to do and genuine fast broadband.

I cannot recommend these guys highly enough, I have tried AOL, Plusnet, BT and Virgin. I would say these are 100x better than any of the mainstream competition.

Check them out.

They only offer the standard variable rate ADSL - 8mbs max.

Very little info on the Thinbroadband site on them which points to the fact they are small eg a standard BT Wholsale reseller ?

O2 are ADSL2+ which is a different ball game
