Increasing wireless router range
Thinking about it - 2/4/08 at 08:57 PM

As above. I have a wireless router which ideally could do with being placed more centrally in the house to give better coverage.

Is there a way of increasing the range by some means? Could the signal be transmitted to another router and on from there? I do have another wireless router doing nothing. Can the two be used in unison some way?

I'm sure someone has the answer

Most you can configure as a bridge/repeater so dig out the manuals.

What you need is a WiFi 'Bridge'. Basically a WiFi device that can sit between you and your router, effectivly extending the range of the router. A lot of WiFi devices have this facility built in. Something like this will do it for you:

If its a Linksys wireless router you might be able to get some 3rd party firmware that lets you crank up the signal strength.

Or if it has removable antennae you might be able to get higher gain versions (don't try too hard to remove them as you might break non-removable ones quite easily!)

Or as someone else suggested you can get range extenders / repeaters.

It is a linksys it has no external antenna. The manual says the optional antenna is not available for uk

Get a belkin g+nimo router. Fantastic range.

What model number is it?

As I said some of the Linksys models have 3rd party firmware available which let you crank the power up a LOT, like 4x or more.

i have that Linkys ethernet bridge in the link. I've been using on my xbox 360 to connect to my router via wireless.

If you want something cheap and cheerful "locost" how about a flatenna

If the aerial unscrews from the back just stick a high gain antenna on it ---- high gain antenna come with a cable to allow you to remote mount it. Usually wall mounted near the ceiling works well -- antenna prices start about 10 pounds.

If it dosen't meet your needs you use either a wireless range extender or run an ethernet cable to a wireless access point.

It isn't worth mucking about doing it any other way.

Note that using a wifi repeater effectively halves the available bandwidth!

A decent high gain antenna is usually one of the most effective mods if possible. If you are considering using an access point then Ebuyer currently have one of the cheapest I have seen at £13.49
