Here I go again...

Generally it runs fine, but after running all day I get things like program launch icons dont respond to clicking...folders won't open by clicking...docs in folders won't open....

Every time a reboot cures it...

Any clues? win XP BTW

Virus? I had a similar problem cured by going into task manager and restarting explorer but as you say, does it after running all day. I did a scan and it now works fine.

Like suggested above, try a virus/spyware scan, just in case.

When stuff like that starts happening to my XP install, it usually indicates time for a reinstall!

How long have you been using XP without reinstalling?

Depending on your usage and how many progs you have installed / uninstalled you might want to try a registry cleaner but I normally find a yearly reinstall of Windoze is the best cure for most ailments.

I haven't reinstalled windows XP for years... i regularly do virus checks, adware checks. Regularly do file clean up (inc. temp files), registry clean and defrag. Then defrag the drive... has worked for me for years.

I've had xp running for about 4 years now, not great but no sign that it needs reinstalling. Excel comes to pieces after a while though and needs reinstalling.

I run XP on 3 machines and have never need to do a reinstall.

I find that after a while all the junk which collects on a pc slows everything down and causes it to not respond very well - the machine seems to lock up but is actually looking for stuff that is no longer there.

I use Tune up Utilities which is a fully functioning 1 month trial which clears loads of redundant stuff out and sorts out the registry items which are doing the slowing the machine down thing.

follow up with a defrag and clear out temporary internet files etc.

I suppsose it really depends if you can get along with the PC as is.

Problem solving something like this could take you ages, and turn out to be impossible to trace, in which case a reinstall might be the faster option for you?

Thanks guys...good tips....I guess the worst thing is, is that I've only had the PC about 6 weeks or so....other than the niggles I'm loving it.

Actually it sounds like you have a very badly behaved bit of software on the computer that is consuming resources. It could be a virus but more likely it some of the extra free software you get with a new PC.

Strip out any extra bits of software provided with the computer.

One other thing AVOID free tune up utillities any of these that do work are just front ends for the existing Microsoft utillities.

In any case the computer is 6 weeks and we can assume it has a decent ammout of hard disk space so a defrag of any kind is unlikely to be required.

I have to agree with that - some of these tune-up utilities actually strip out too much. My last experiment with one of these left me with my usb ports disabled and my only option left was to reinstall XP
