Could also be the channel that the router is transmitting on has loads of others nearby to compte with. Try changing the transmission channel to see if it gets better...

Netgear router usually have a screw on aerial --- try getting a remote one that connects by cable --- usually about 10 quid from Maplin.

If the card in the pc has a screw in aerial you can also do the same at the other end.

no microwave or fones near it when i brought it it just said wireless compatible have seen a usb wireless adapter but would of thought mine just has that built in it instead how do you change the channel on the router

I have had a similar problem with Netgear stuff. I now have a few devices setup, Wii and 2 laptops all with excellent signal and internet connection.

Set wireless channel to 11 using g+b mode. This is quick enough for video etc., you dont need the 108Mbps rate as it drops out more often.

Despite hating this router for a few years I have found these settings to be easily the most reliable to a point where it is faultless. Oh and I have my mobile and wireless home phone near it...

To alter channel go to wireless settings its in the top section.

there is nothing on the router to change the channel but on the bottom theres a sticker which says channel 11 have had a look on my computer too and there is no aerial connection on that

The Sky router firmware is crippled and I can't remember if you can change the channel. If you know what you are doing then the following is useful:
