hi all
i am tring to fix my mums laptop with not much succsess basically she used it yesterday used it again later in the evening and she just gets multi colured lines all over the screen, she took it to a shop down the road didnt even look at it told her the mother board has had it..

if pluged in a old monitor to the port on the side of computer and it works fine so would it be a new screen or maybe bad connection .

3 year old toshiba laptop

thanks simon

Obviously - check the connections first. While you're in there, give it a good clean. I doubt it's the screen if you're seeing lines... maybe the output on the graphics card which goes direct to the VDU, there is usually a different output for external screens. If this is the case your shop may be right... new MB

lines all over the screen will most likely be the multi connector going into the screen or at the mother board. Even the chance that it could be the cable that goes in between.
In all the laptops I have had to fix my first bet would be the connector at the screen or the screen itself at the connector ( the screen probably has the connector permanantly attached to it. If its off warrenty your likely looking at a new laptop as it will not be worth the repair price unless you can get a used screen.

I broke my screen and got a s/h Tosh screen for £80 and takes about 5 mins to fit. Found a laptop breakers in Watford, he does really good deals on laptops. mostly returns from big places like PC World which he fixes and sells on.

Could be the ribbon cable thaat goes through the Hinge is damaged - anyway will need to be re-seated or replaced. or it is the screen

^^^^^ My money would be on the ribbon cable which hinges, the more you open and shut it the shorter its life. I've replaced it on Thinkpads for not much £££, no idea about the Tosh though.

Try the machine with the lid at different angles, sometimes it causes a connection to be made....

If its a Qosmio F10 then its a motherboard fault, its was a known fault with them
