My work have banned the use of certain websites such as ebay, facebook and locostbuilders and it is p***ing me off. I have heard that it is possible to get some software which when stored on a pen drive allows the user to bypass the website block. Anybody heard what this is or better still got a copy?

Look up free proxy servers.
Or try using TOR.....

Should be v possible....

Bear in mind though both systems are fairly insecure so you wouldn't want to log-in to your online bank....

If your network admin is worth his salary he'll have blocked all of the popular web proxies as well.

[sensible hat]Even if using work internet for personal stuff isn't a sackable offence where you are, circumventing the content filters almost certainly will be.[/sensible hat] So don't get caught

Most IT security bods worth their salt should have already blocked Proxy sites and you may find that using a proxy or a pen drive may fall foul of the companies IT policy and potentially leave you in the brown stuff.

Particularly the USB pen as if you work with sensitive information (or even info which could be valuable to a competitor) they may fear you are either stealing data or bringing in viruses - intentionally or otherwise.

Yes I know I sound like a goody two shoes bore but I have to bust people at work for stuff like this fairly regular and some can end up losing their job. I do work for a bank though so IT security is hot tatoes.

Depends on what is being used to block sites, i.e. local filter or remote hosted solution, how it is firewalled and how good/knowledgeable the admin is at configuring it all.

And while I could suggest a few ways to get round it, I would also not want to get you into trouble at work

Although you could just ask for it to be opened up during lunch time (dependant on company policy) I've found most companies are happy to allow this?

So not worth it. I can look at locostbuilders at work, but if I couldn't I wouldn't want to jeopardize my job for the sake of the site! How about on your mobile phone?

your best bet is to run a web server on your home PC and then run s/w to open a secure connection to your home PC, you then run a redirector on your home pc (or remote access s/w) and browse from home....

i've heard of people doing this ..... its gets very interesting as they're not browsing banned sites from work, they're browsing to an allowed site (as home isn't banned its therefore allowed). Of course your boss won't agree with this but HR will. You then end up having a very interesting discussion and losing your job the next time you're not looking!

Its really not worth it.

get a PDA/windows based phone.

My o2 XDA orbit has IE and althought sites like ebay, hotmail etc are blocked on work server, the phone doesnt connect thru in the same way, it just uses the connection. and the huge bonus is, its not traceable!
