FUBARed ?
Macbeast - 1/7/08 at 08:29 PM

I switched off PC (on XP) and it seemed to take for ever to close down. Next time I used it it seemed ok. Now it won't boot up beyond the blue screen showing Windows XP and the little flag. ie it doesn't get to desktop.
I can't make it go into safe mode to try restore-it just carries on as above and stops. No disc activity that I can see.

Possibly virussed ?

our workshop laptop did this a while ago, ended up with a new hard drive

9000rpm - 1/7/08 at 08:49 PM

boot up using the winxp CD and press F2 to enter the disaster recover process(thats what i think its called). Use the tools such as chkdsk to check the hard disk.

Don't have CD - they don't seem to supply them these days.

If I crash it when it restarts it goes through Windows C drive file check procedure as normal and the drive light flashes so it seems to be reading the drive ok.

Just doesn't go any further.

Thank God I backed up my car build pictures

You are not alone with this problem as mine did just that 2 days ago ,working fine when i shut it down , the next day the trouble started on boot up only got as far as a quick flash of the windows logo , no go with the XP pro CD , i am waiting for a floppy boot disk now in the hope that that will sort it all out .

you haven't just 'upgraded' to service pack 3 by any chance have you?

Macbeast - 2/7/08 at 08:05 AM

No I haven't

retry going to safe mode.. Press F8 just after the bios loads and before the boot screen appears.

I had this happen on my laptop a while back and it was the memory module gone west

miikae - 2/7/08 at 12:24 PM

Just had a go at trying to sort mine out , safe mode F8 etc and still no go .
I had'nt loaded any new software or upgrades either but cant rule out a virus though .
So until i can get hold of a boot floppy it will have to stay as it is nackered .
Does anyone know if or which files i can copy from one of my other computers running on XP Pro to jump start this one .

Think answer's going to be a new computer. PC been running 4 years and getting very flaky.
This has thrown up a new problem. This laptop works with many sites, including this one but gives "page not available" on things like e-mail and messenger. I can get the e-bay welcome page but when I try to log in the page again is not available

Is this some kind of security issue with HTTPS etc ?

edit

PS

I've just ordered a new PC so PLEASE nobody tell me the quick and easy way to fix the old one

Further info on the crashes , i have just found this virus (HTML/Rce.Gen. ) after running a virus scan due to this Laptop crashing just the same as my main comp did a few days ago , but fortunatly this comp running on Vista was able to cope and thus sort itself out thankfully , Main comp still down , standard boot disks wont fix it so now awaiting a disk that is supposed to be able to sort it , if it does will post on here in a couple of days with the outcome .

HTML/Rce.Gen

Description:
One major goal of malware authors is to execute code on the victims computer. This Remote Code Execution can be achieved by using security holes in the web browser. The AHeAD HTML Heuristics detects the attempt to execute code and alerts it as HTML/Rce.Gen
