We have had a problem with out internet at home for about 2 months.
Basically our router thing (technical term) wouldnt connect to the net.
After a thread on here, i was advised to get a new dsl plug thing that goes into the wall. This has helped and we can now connect to the net but cant
access any sites
If you cant access any sites, how did you write this posting? (Was that done from work or elsewhere?)
It may be that you need to reset your router.
I would turn off your PC (s) then switch off the router.
Switch in the router, then say 5 mins later (to give the router time to cycle up and re-connect) then switch on one PC.
Clear out the Temporary files in Internet Explorer (I set my temp files to 50Mb max)
Clear out your history files (but not your favourites).
Then try a well known site like bbc.co.uk or even one called locostbuilders.co.uk
You dont say Who your ISP is or what type of router it is.
IS it one of those where you have to click on an Icon on your desktop to connect to the internet everytime you want to go on line, or is it always
connected (ie no clicking the On line / Connect Icon)?
Do be aware that the cheap 99p filters are not that good. Especially if you have other services such as Calling Line ID (on INCOMING Calls, not
outgoing). These use low level signals and the roll off on the cheap filters degrade those services.
Also how far away are you from the exchange? The Line length has a significant effect on the ADSL service and the overall speed you get.
Can you not phone the ISP? They should run some tests then get BT out.
What router do you have?
Ours just stops from time to time.
Switching on & off doesnt work.
It needs its internal flash memory reset
which is done via the software that came with it.
Good luck.

Can you ping a site using both its' IP address and its' domain name ?
ie open a command window and type
ping 84.234.16.100
Hit return key and you should get something like this
PING 84.234.16.100 (84.234.16.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=59 time=98.5 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=59 time=98.0 ms
64 bytes from 84.234.16.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=59 time=98.6 ms
Then try
ping locostbuilders.co.uk
Hit the reurn key and again you should get something like this
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk (84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=9 ttl=59 time=98.0 ms
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk (84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=10 ttl=59 time=98.0 ms
64 bytes from www.locostbuilders.co.uk (84.234.16.100): icmp_seq=11 ttl=59 time=98.2 ms

Now if you can ping using the ip address in this case 84.234.16.100 which is locostbuilders but not using locostbuilders.co.uk you have a dns or
dchp networking error .
If you can't ping to the outside world using either form of the address then you need to see if you can ping your own router -- for that you
need your routers ip address. on your local network.
This address should be in your routers instruction book or disk but if you can can't find that info from the book.
Try these pings to see if you get a return packet
ping 10.0.01
or
ping 10.0.0.254
or
ping 192.168.0.1
or
ping 192.168.0.254
or
ping 192.168.1.1
or
ping 192.168.1.254
These are the most likely addresses for your router if these don't work it easier to download some free ip scanner software on another PC
with internet connection and load it on to your pc via a cd rom or memory stick, and run test with it.
