Avast AV vs AVG 8.0
joneh - 27/10/08 at 06:26 PM

Hi All

I just got rid of AVG 8.0 as my PC was too slow. Put Avast on and it's now like a new PC!

Just thought I'd post incase any else's PC is at a crawl and they have AVG.

speedyxjs - 27/10/08 at 06:28 PM

I used to have avast but avg is not slower for me.

Paradoxia0 - 27/10/08 at 06:33 PM

AVG 8 appears to have actually killed the old laptop I installed it on! Blue screens on boot-up and random deaths once it was booted...
I have had to rebuild from scratch so I went for Avast this time and it seems OK.

clairetoo - 27/10/08 at 06:37 PM

Hmmm..........ever since AVG 8 appeared my computer is so slow I've even considered a complete re-build and up-grade - yep , it's that slow
Might just have a go with Avast

blakep82 - 27/10/08 at 06:51 PM

is avast the free one?
i'm really pushing my luck on this computer... no anti virus...

joneh - 27/10/08 at 06:54 PM

Yup, the home version is free.

Oh and I did a minimal install (without the skins)

blakep82 - 27/10/08 at 06:55 PM

should really put it on here

joneh - 27/10/08 at 07:02 PM

Yup, especially with the latest threat.

Check your updates for MS08-067, the latest security update.

TOO BADD - 27/10/08 at 07:14 PM

Same here.Put it on on Sat after reading the recent post. Very good

mookaloid - 27/10/08 at 08:50 PM

The all too regular full screen pop ups with Avast were really annoying

I am using a 3 version copy of Kaspersky off ebay which works out at about £4 per pc in my house.

Seems pretty good to me....

My anti virus is very fast: none m/ >.< m/

blakep82 - 27/10/08 at 09:26 PM

I am using Kaspersky too - awesome piece of kit... though it isn't free it is good.

How strange! ......Never ever had a pop up with Avast! nor on any of the puters and lap tops I have put it on!...and I have used it for years.

I sometimes get a tiny pop-up in the bottom-right corner when something needs attention. Certainly nothing full-screen.

Fozzie - 27/10/08 at 10:20 PM

Yes, the little one that just says Virus Database has been updated...... lasts about 2-3 seconds and goes away?......deffo unobtrusive, and what I would expect, when it auto updates, but nothing full screen, and never interrupts my work.

I now have Avast on my PC - it did a full scan on re-start , and I was shocked to see just how much adware and trojens were there , that AVG had ignored
It certainly is faster now though

That's good news...

But be aware that if you have system restore on your system, that the trojans could be lurking there (restore points)

I've had Avast for 3 years and never had any problem with pop-ups!! Great piece of kit that is so good i would quite happilly pay for it.

Highly recommended, especially to those with no virus killer as its simple pimple to install, is unobtrusive and is very easy to work.

Does seem to be a good program going by all you accounts.
What would be the process of changing from avg to avast as regards uninstalling avg COMPLETELY and then installing avast.
I also seem to have a huge amount of registry crap that needs weeded out but can't find any free progs to do this either. They all say free (but it's a scan only) and then you need to buy the disc to get the full clean up.
My machine has become very slow lately so i need to look at something.

The real answer is to back up all your data and re-install windoze and all the apps. You'll find it all 'refreshed' and a lot quicker.

Say that - I wouldn't want to do it!

I'll stick with my Linux...

Not had AVG so I wouldn't know, but I would be inclined to download Avast home edition, save it on your puter, eg desktop, uninstall AVG, reboot, then install Avast from the saved download on your desktop. That way, you wont 'have' to be online to install it......

As for your other question, I do not have an answer, I have Spybot Search and Destroy, and a little programme called SpyWare Blaster, and my registry is relatively clear of 'unwanteds' ......so not had the need for a registry cleaner......

If anyone is using FireFox 3, I have recently added an extension called Web of Trust (WOT), which will flag up unsafe websites, by putting the site in shade, and big red warning signs.......

I have put this on off-spring number 4's lappy after spending a few hours getting rid of that 'orrible trojan 'Antivirus 2009' ...
