Painting aluminium

Hi Everyone,

I have a pair of westfield cast ali windscreen uprights that I want to paint black. I have the etch primer and correct topcoat/laquer but am wondering what I can use to degrease them as they have probably been polished at some point!

I would be grateful for any help!

Thanks
Shaun

use thinners, panel wipe or similar then put a dust coat onto the ali rather than a wet coat

Bung them in the dishwasher when no ones looking.

Caustic soda - works a treat for pre-treating before anodising

I flatted mine with some wet & dry and then wiped them with thinners, Applied the etching primer and then the top coat in thin coats built up slowly.
Really pleased with the finished result, Don't 'polish' the surface of the uprights though as you may have paint adhesion issues.

I removed all the old powder coating first with Nitromors.

AFAIK Barcoat is the only way to ensure old ali paints well.
Problem is no matter how much you clean or etch there's still the risk of contaminants coming out of it and you won't know until after you've done all the work.
It's used extensively by Landie owners for that reason.
HTH.

I always ensure the paint and parts are warm before applying the paint.
