R1 airbox under std MNR bonnet
bassett - 24/1/10 at 01:34 PM

Hi has anyone with a R1 pre 03 managed to get a R1 airbox under the bonnet with out a vent being needed? is it just a case of cutting the top off and shortening?
Reason being im thinking about future track days and i think it will help with induction noise levels and possible performance as im sure the open filter is suffering slightly from heat soak.
cheers
Adam

Why not fit a pipercross PX600 airbox, they will fit under an MNR bonnet without the need to cut a hole in it. You can duct cool air from the nose straight into it

Iain Baker has one fitted to his VortX, I believe it works well & looks good too.

Nope they fit just fine as long as its the 75mm inlet & not the 100mm

my experience on a rolling road was the pipercross airbox was quite restrictive and that was the 100mm inlet.
the actual filter is the restrictive part.
i'm still using mine attached to a naca duct in the nose but as soon as i get round to making another airbox its going.
definatly wouldn't recommend buying one

so what would be a good choice then guys?

bassett - 24/1/10 at 05:30 PM

bigfoot4616 whats yours fitted on, other than that the price also concerns me what are they 150+?
craig thanks for the pics that looks fantastic with the tb joiners, did you make these yourself or buy and if you dont mind me asking how much as that would save the modifying and the box will work perform better if left as standard.
thanks
Adam

Here's my homemade box. I used aluminium, and fibreglassed the inside.
Then used a CBS filter and some vent holes in the side of the bonnet. Rescued attachment 5airbox2.jpg

Pipercross airbox wouldn't fit under the bonnet on my MNR (chassis no. 74).
I believe it is down to the chassis as the later ones are 25mm taller from nose back to scuttle which gives you the extra height needed for it to fit.

mines on a carbed blade engine.
can't remember but i'm sure it was well over £150. mine actually came from MNR

I'm planning on using the standard box upside down & making up an ally plate with the correct hole spacing for the carbs bonded to the bottom of the box. I've seen it done on an R1 and it seems to fit snugly under a standard bonnet.

Ahh yes I forgot about the early bodywork being not as tall

Who knows what chassis style i've got then, always a mystery maybe the fully customised idea like amlayos's is the way to go.
Thanks again.

I got my box today for the grand sum of £20 off ebay. I was expecting just the box but its got a K&N filter, all the clamps to TB's and the air sensor. When i needed just the sensor and joiners for the Piper sausage filter a few months back i got one off Malc for £25 so this is a right result. The K&N has even cleaned up pretty well with a blow through and wash with some K&N cleaner i had lying around. Now to see how tall it is and mod it.
