My Licence is out of date!!!
Steve Hignett - 12/1/12 at 04:53 PM

Hi All,

What does it say on Line/Item No. 4b, on your Driving licence?

On the plastic part of mine, the dates are;-

4a, 12 - 06 - 06
4b, 03 - 02 - 11

I'm gobsmacked - I thought they were valid for at least eight thousand million years?

ATB
Steve

ps, can I renew it online?

IIRC your licence expires on your 70th (when you have to re-apply for it).
The photo card expires on the 10th aniversay of when it was issued, or more importantly when the photo was updated (ie id you had a provisional for 2 years, then passed and got a full licence but kept the same photo, your new photocard would expire in 8 years - 10yrs from the issue of the provisional).

4 a is the issue date,
4b is expirey of the card.
on the back there is another date which should be yout 70th bday.

So you need to send them about £30 and a new photo.

card needs the photo renewed every 10 years (mines more than 10 years old now though, and still in date, as i need to renew mine every 3 years, so its still in date)

the paper bit's valid til you're 70 (or so) but the card needs replaced every 10 years

There was a fair amount of coverage in the motoring press a while back as DVLA had issued ever so many hundred thousand photo-card licenses and as they were now ten years old, they had expired. Take copies of your license before you send it off as they have been known to come back with entitlements missing.

They sent me a letter when mine was due with the usual threat of a fine if not done.

You old git, Steve!

I'm still on an old paper one untill they force me to change it.

Good advice about the photocopies! An old work colleague of mine sent his off for replacement. Never got it back. At all! Upon contacting DVLA, they had no records of him ever taking his test! The poor chap had to take theory/practical tests again. He tried all sorts (not the Bassetts ones), but had no proof that he had taken his test 20 odd years before. I would not have believed this story from any Tom Dick or Harry, but I knew this chap very well. I'd never ever trust the DVLA with anything!
You've been warned!

They better had with mine! I know it's this year..

My other issue is does someone have to sign it and if so who? I'm no longer friends with all the doctors, solicitors and coppers that I never hung around with

Same here, very fragile and held together with selotape

Got told a while ago in Halfords (buying a number plate) by some snotty kid that it wasn't a real licence and tried to refuse it due to no picture. Soon put him straight!!!

Hi, you can renew the picture at some post offices I travelled to blandford for mine they have the special booth for the picture you have to redo your signature too which was a pain as its done on a silly digital pad which is very difficult to write on.
when you get the reminder it tells you where you can go or where to find out.
in fact i was pleased to change mine as the new pic is much better than the previous one.
agree to the photocopying bit as have heard of entitlements going missing and you are left with no licence whilst its in the post
