I dropped my 2009 Audi A5 2.0 TFSI off at Audi last week to get the ball rolling on the well known Oil Consumption issue (if you don't just
google Audi TFSI and you'll find loads of info, plus a BBC watchdog report). Anyway, the first stage is a consumption test - Audi quote 1 litre
of oil used per 1242 miles - where the test is failed if you use more than 0.5L over 621 miles. I used a litre over around 1k miles then after
booking, another litre over around 700ish miles. So oil consumption test began and the oil separator has also been replaced "as this sometimes
fixes the issue" despite already been identified as piston ring issues. So off I go to travel 621 miles or until the 1 litre warning returns,
whichever is first.
The problem I have now encountered is that the car once returned to me, has started spluttering/misfiring when under load. It idles fine, revs cleanly
in neutral fine drives fine if driven sensibly, but anything with 50% throttle or more in 2nd gear onwards under load, it will begin to
stutter/misfire but will still slowly accelerate through with lots of juddering as you'd expect. The check engine light flashes then goes off
however now it stayed on for good.
I plan to try plug my OBD reader in tonight and see what its saying but wondering if anyone would shed some light on the issue. Its booked back in for
Friday but until then I need to make do feathering the car around in basically limp mode.
Yeah quite common for missfire with the piston ring issue. The oil getting past the rings covers the spark plugs causing the missfire.
Really does sound like it needs to go back to Audi, especially if this has started happening since its been in the dealership.
Such a shame these nice modern cars still have these inherent issues (see my post on BMW cam chains that just cost me £1500). Have to say I was
thinking of selling the BMW for a TFSI TT, but would hate to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, my other option was a 2013 mx5 which is simple
and doesn't appear to have any reliability issues.
One of the locals in my nearby pub bought big BMWs or Mercedes because he drove huge mileages every year - up to 75K per annum - as part of his
business. He bought those brands because he thought they'd stand up to the pace - he's not a fast or hard driver, it's just the total
mileage. Both brands have proved to be appalling - he's had wheels frozen to the hubs, gearbox issues, engine issues, etc, etc. It was an
ongoing saga of despair...
I suggested that he try a big Lexus, but he's not biting...

I have a 2011 Scirocco 2.0 tsi, had a misfire issue recently, new set of plugs and coilpacks sorted it, Bosch coilpacks were £99 from Euro car parts. I didn't know it was them 100%, but felt it was more cost effective to try some rather than probably paying more than that to get the dealers to diagnose and charge me a lot more for VW coilpacks

As said its already booked back in with Audi for Friday and as its only under moderate acceleration, I can easily drive around it. I plugged my OBD
reader in and it says cylinder 2 misfire so shouldn't be too difficult to sort out if it is a failing coil. I admitted to Audi is was probably an
unfortunate coincidence it began after they had it despite being unlikely it was caused by the main issue or any work they've done but
nonetheless it went in fine and came out faulty.
Hopefully they'll find and fix the issue no problem Friday, however my MMI is showing the oil level has already lost 0.5 litres in about 150miles
so no doubt it'll be back in for pistons, rings, and other partial rebuild to try fix the main issue. Failing that, new engine time......so far
all FOC so hopefully that continues
