Kit car friendly MOT stations - Lancs.
Westy1994 - 9/3/13 at 04:42 PM

Following on from last years fiasco when the MOT station attempted to do an emissions test when it was not required, they swore blind it was, but checking with VOSA proved them wrong.. I am now in need ( shortly) of a new MOT station to visit.

Can anyone in the Lancs area, preferably as close to my home as possible recommend a 'in the know' and ' genuine' tester please. I used the last place because they had ramps that my car would drive onto without ripping the underside of the car off, I have now tried 6 stations locally over the years and am now running out of locations.

Thanks

P.S. Would it be an idea to have a sticky somewhere that lists all MOT friendly stations ?, or am I blind and can't see one?.

Im not sure if he does MOT's but john Clarkson Auto's near chorley is a kit car garage/ specialist/ finisher. It might be worth an ask?

Ive had a quick google and cant find a website but I think this is an upto date no- (01257) 263879.

There is a MOT station in Leyland called Meanygate Garage PR25 2ZJ.

Phil Clegg who is sometimes active on here works there and he has a Haynes, I got mine tested there by Phil.

Straight tester.

I use Devonshire Garage just off New Hall Lane in Preston (PR1 4UE)

Westy1994 - 9/3/13 at 09:21 PM

Thanks folks, will make a few calls on Monday. I could use the 'old' station again, but since they are seemingly unfamiliar with the regs on kitcars I would rather not.

PeteS2k - 10/3/13 at 11:48 AM

John Clarkson Autos has moved to Westhoughton... tel. 01942 818745. I used them - before they moved - to do corner weighting and alignment. Andrew's the guy there. I'm not sure they actually do MOTs, but he knows kit cars... The website's down, but I've seen activity on the internet from him this year, so may be worth a call anyway.

I also used a place in Fleetwood for a pre-IVA check (about 3 years ago now). http://markholmesrallysports.co.uk/# I went there because he does motorsport prep, so my argument was he would be more likely to be understanding of non-bog-standard vehicles. He was also quite helpful...

For me, there's always Normoss Motors a few hundred yards down the road - so may have a chat with them as well (convenience!)

I'm due for my first MOT before May, so I'll be interested in the outcome of any research you do

Westy1994 - 10/3/13 at 03:45 PM

Thanks Pete, will do. A mate of mine used to use someone in Fleetwood, but I can't get hold of him to ask who it was at the moment. Will do some homework this coming week. To be honest, any MOT station (where a low car will fit onto its ramp) SHOULD do, its just a shame that most of them don't know their own rules and regs regarding kit cars and the tests applicable to cars with older engines installed and 'Q' plated cars. Bit like an Electrician who spends 99% of his time fitting out houses then gets asked to do a caravan, same job, same wires - just different regs.

I have a number for a garage in Southport, he will sort you out. He used to have a kit car too

D Beddows - 11/3/13 at 03:57 PM

Would that be Church garage by any chance Joe? I bought that kit car if it is took me ages to offload it on to some other sucker (sold it for the Ford bits actually )

My dad uses them for his Morgan MOT's, they are quite 'unusual' vehicle friendly

Good luck, they've been great with me over the last few years so hopefully you'll have no problems. Please report back on how you got on.

Hi,

I am also in Euxton (just off euxton lane in the new estate) !. You are welcome to pop in for a brew anytime.

Just popped out for a spin tonight and dropped by the Highfield pub in Croston. Every Monday the Leyland mini club meet there during the summer.

There was a GTM Rossa there too so I think they don't mind if other cars pop along to chat cars too (don't quote me on that though !) !?.

Some tasty mini's there tonight !!.

daveb83 - 8/4/13 at 09:13 PM

if it passes its MOT i will otherwise ill be elbows deep fixing bits...

Hi Mitch, its actually the girlfriend that lives on Buckshaw, she lives in the flats on guernsey ave, i spend a lot of time at hers, apparently its to much hasle to pack a hairdryer, make up etc to stay at my house in preston... lazy more like, a chat and a run out with other owners is always good

Peter Cowley - 8/4/13 at 09:22 PM

Meant to say.....one of my friends is a mechanic at Canterbury st garage in Blackburn, they just MOT'd mine ! They will sort you out....!!

mitch2b - 9/4/13 at 06:01 AM

Peter Cowley - 9/4/13 at 10:47 AM

How did it go?

daveb83 - 9/4/13 at 07:30 PM

was a thing of beauty, she passed, no advisories, one happy chappy at the moment, got to renew tax before the end of the month now and a couple of other little jobs id like to get sorted on it now ive had it back on the road which i had forgot about since i last drove it

cerbera - 9/4/13 at 07:41 PM

That's great news

daveb83 - 9/4/13 at 07:56 PM

it is bearing in mind ive had the car in bits the past few weeks while i re-wired the whole car from scratch.

I now need to fit a throttle return spring, a choke cable so i dont keep having to take bonnet off and have a look at the pedal box in general to adjust pivot points to try and get more pedal travel on throttle and clutch... about an inch of travel from idle to full throttle is a bit to sensitive for my liking. Also need to strip down number 4 carb as the float seems to be sticking open and over fuelling

daveb83 - 9/4/13 at 07:57 PM

thanks for the recommendation by the way, they were a very friendly bunch of guys working there they all had a good look over the car

cerbera - 9/4/13 at 08:03 PM

No probs, glad it went smoothly seeing as I recommended them.
I've taken all three of my kits there over the years without any issues and I think they enjoy seeing something a bit different from the usual hum drum.

You'll be ready for a run out shortly then. If you want, u2u me your number and I'll give you a text the next we're out. They are usually a last minute ish affair.

[Edited on 9/4/13 by cerbera]

daveb83 - 9/4/13 at 08:18 PM

they definetly like something different, turns out that one of the guys that works there lives just round the corner from me, was saying that he had seen it before and that when ive been out in it and hes seen it his little lad talks about it for days afterwards haha

u2u on way regarding drive outs etc
