eeeep! hope you're good with a welder..... good luck with it!

iank - 22/1/09 at 04:14 PM

While I've driven ones as bad as that (when young and daft) you'll be doing a lot of metal work to get back to a good condition. Hope you didn't pay over the odds.
Good luck.

JeffHs - 22/1/09 at 04:20 PM

Good luck!
I brought one back to life from a similar condition many years ago. It was a Mk1 woody Traveller - wish I'd still got it. What you've taken on is do-able and the parts are all available and cheap, but don't cost your labour!

will121 - 22/1/09 at 04:22 PM

certified big job i think! whats the project, motorbike engine?

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/1/09 at 04:25 PM

You need a very big derusting rig to deal with that.....electrosis on a huge scale.

speedyxjs - 22/1/09 at 04:27 PM

Please tell me you got that cheap
Should be a good project. #hows the MK going?

Stuart_B - 22/1/09 at 04:33 PM

hi, thanks for the replys, i am not bad with the mig welder.

what do you think i should off payed for it?

as the project plan was put a v6 in it, but i have changed my mind i am going for a vauxhall redtop engine, but still making my own subframe.

my mk, has been sva,ed, it pasted first time, phoned up abiut build up inspection and know got to send off all the paper work or take it up to her.

grazzledazzle - 22/1/09 at 04:52 PM

I wouldn't have paid for it...
Very big job. Is it worth it?

ashg - 22/1/09 at 04:59 PM

Pretty simple job but will take a while.

What will scare you is when the panels come off and you find more rust behind.

I would recommend completely stripping it and having it sand blasted. Will cost about £200 but will find thin spots that you would never normally find.

As for price you paid. i would say its irrelevant. You paid what you wanted to pay or it wouldn’t be yours

restore a mini is next on my list of todo's but space is limited until i move again lol

Humbug - 22/1/09 at 05:21 PM

It would have been quicker to show us any panels without rust

Omni - 22/1/09 at 05:21 PM

HEY HEY

Welcome to the club

TGR-ECOSSE - 22/1/09 at 07:20 PM

Welcome to the world of rust I have fixed worse than that. Try to get genuine panels if you can as they are so much easier to work with.
You can never have enough Mini pics so here are a few of mine.

And we race em as well

triumphdave - 22/1/09 at 07:28 PM

I had quite a few minis when I was a yoof.I would love to do a rear wheel drive or a red top conversion. As a matter of interest would you have to SVA it and how would you go about insuring it.I converted a 850 to a 1275 many moons ago and had to get an engineers report and hassle insuring it.

Stuart_B - 22/1/09 at 07:58 PM

hi, well the fun starts once i sort out the grarge, as i have a kit car, 2 jetski and motorbike and a big outboard, and two work benchs and my dad's motorbike in bits as well, so i need organise some space for it, so i can start the work.

i am thinking of a fiberglass front, so that deals with the most of the rust on the front, and the bulkhead mod a bit so i can deal with the rust then.

the in a panel i think i might beable to patch up, the outer panel nearside i might be able to recover by using a new bit of steel and the body hammer set i got.

the nearside door need to be replaced.the inner and outer sill needs work only one point so maybe just a cut a bit out and put a bit in, insead of a whole new panel.

the offside, i need a whole new iner and outer sill, and new a outer a pannel, inner a pannel might resuce.

both front floors need to be replaced.

so not to much to do.

i am sticking to fwd, but need to changing the brakes from drums to disc. and use some cheap coil overs on the front.

grazzledazzle - 22/1/09 at 08:06 PM

You are all mad!

JoelP - 22/1/09 at 08:08 PM

i was on a job last week and the lad next door had a mini dying on the drive, i joked to the customer about how it looked ready for the pikeys and he said he had just bought it, to do up! Was worse than yours i think stuart, holes everywhere.

Andybarbet - 22/1/09 at 08:56 PM

Weve got one too !
Tiny bit of rust but nothing to worry about, good luck with the project, my misses wont let me do any mods to our one, its completely original and its going to stay that way
Mini's........Just gotta love em..

austin man - 22/1/09 at 09:31 PM

you think thats bad imagine my 1958 austin A35, oh an I had to make all my repair panels except the sills.
If you have the desire you will overcome, my firs car a Mini was far worse than any ive seen on this post the only thing without rus was the petrol cap I think I still managed to get it done using an Arc welder with mig its far easier. Rather than repair replace if you can afford especially when you see the price of panels repairs can be false economy

minitici - 22/1/09 at 09:41 PM

I once had a Mini Pick-up, after I had welded in new panels, I realised I really only bought a roof Nearly every other panel was replaced or patched....
My 1993 Italian Job needs a good few panels before it gets back on the road (I bought it new and has only done 45K miles).

How you going to do your RWD Clanger?

Going to try and get an IRS setup jammed in there similar to that one MAC did for one of the members on here?
Probably with a Freelander diff.
Did look at a Z-cars setup but way toooo much dough by my reckoning.
Going to aim for an IVA / SVA or whatever it is these days or future, just for piece of mind, possible resale / insurance woes and to keep the red tape beuracrats happy.

Here's my progress so far:
ZX12R Mini
Got to get rid of all that rust first though

Clanger,

I thought I recognised your Mini from somewhere I am on the Mini Forum too and I am already subscribed to that thread

I have the same idea basically. You are talking about Chis Jessop's Mini

Are you going to make the rear up as you go or do you have an idea? I am aiming for the same thing so maybe it is something we could work on together? Plans I mean

O

Stuart_B - 23/1/09 at 01:54 PM

i am on the mini froum aswell, and the 16vmini froum and colchester mini club froum.

I'm not going to "re-invent the wheel" as far as the IRS goes, but just adapt the book design to fit inside the mini rear end. Am going to try and avoid cutting half the rear of the car off as per Z-cars design though.
