Dr Martens

I bought a pair of DM's a year ago paid good money for them too, I noticed today that my feet were getting wet and checked the soles guess what both are split. This is the first time a pair of DMs have lasted me less that 3 years.

Contact DM. I had the same problem a couple of years ago and they sent me a new pair and my money back.

Confused but excited. - 22/11/10 at 08:31 PM

Obviously good advice, as Owelly has had two pair now.

Take 'm back and make a fuss! They are now made in the far east and not nearly as good as they used to be! I bought a pair in the summer and they split at the seam after 2 months, the replacement pair lasted 6 months and did the same but after that time the sole had worn almost bare, certainly wouldn't pass MOT!

My current work boot of choice is the Danner Telson GTX and my spares which are Altberg Peacekeepers.

My Altbergs will last longer than the Danners, both are good and are 4 years old now.

The DM sole used to crack at the centre just under your ball

eeek, i've only ever worn dr martins at work (work in an office). 3 pairs have lasted me 12 years. Was about to get another pair for when i get a job again ....... might not now, i buy them cause they're comfy, presentable and last. If they're going to keep falling apart i might as well go to asda.

Were they the soft boot type, Greenhams code 101101 IIRC?

These, or the older/newer derivative (mine look slightly different):

If so, yeah they only last a year. I get a new pair every year from work and get £16 stopped out of my wages for them (we get certain allowance). Been having these every year for 3-4 now and have had the previous 2 styles of the same boot and they all went the same way.

Mine cracked about a fortnight ago and now I come home with wet socks every day. I'll have to get my ass to the workwear guy before the snow starts!

On the plus side though, they are the most comforable I've ever had.

They do two grades of leather classic DM's now, made in China and about £50-60 a pair, and made in England which are £100-120 a pair. The UK mades ones (I have a pair of shoes) are a totally different quality to the Chinese made ones and are the closest you can get to ones made 20-30 years ago.

Neither should split like that though, I'm sure they'll replace them.
