Went past one today and felt i got caught but was not stopped. I dont know the speed limit or if i was 10% over.
They seemed in no rush to chase and stop any speeders and would have trouble pulling people over on a dual carrageway at a round about.
Do they just take photos with the hand held and send it through now?
Not sure about camera's but I got stopped once and he showed me the screen on a hand held. I did question the reading and asked for proof that it
was taken against my car. They could not show any evidence that it was actually a reading from my car and gave me the "talking too".
I was lucky that time.....
I've have seen hand held digi cameras with an officer on a bike. i know it was because he caught me! fCUker.
Was still quite a big unit. chances are it was just a laser and he was waiting for a real speedy speeder.
Afaik, the BiN are considered 'expert witnesses' and as such, they don't need photos as evidence. Their word is all they need....

No they don't have cameras
As stated above their word is good enough
They would have stopped you there and then, the range is good enough that they would have a reading before you were aware they were there
If they wanted to stop you they had plenty of time, you got away with it

Slightly related - out of curiosity, when you get a camera speeding (or congestion charge) ticket, do they automatically send you a photo of your car?
If not, is there any downside to requesting one?

They do, not all mobile speed cameras are 'in' Vans or cars. They have portable versions. As mentioned above, I have a great shot of my car that they sent me with an acompanying NIP.
Yup I also have a nice photo of me from a small detector not a van!

Not true, I have been caught twice in the last two years, first time I only knew about it when the fine came through in the post, second time 3 months ago and I thought I saw something in the lay by, then 2 weeks later the letter arrived.
I was not even going much over the limit
if you are lucky you will get a speed awareness course, did that in lieu of the first one.
The do not bother stopping you these days, "ker...Ching" money in the bank.

Unc,
Market Street ? just outside the Ginger Goose ? turning Left keeping City hall on your Right ??
ATB agriv8
That's the one, they changed it all overnight, what used to be buses only became public, what was public became buses only.
My own fault really, but was caught twice in 24 hours
The usual rule of thumb most police forces use is an allowance of 10% plus 2 mph. So they are unlikely to nick you for doing 34 in a 30 limit.
Its not guaranteed though, you could still be unlucky.
I don't know if it's still the case but my dad got done by one in the mid 90's and they said if he wanted to see the photo he had to take it to court where the punishment is alot higher.

I think you will find that that rule of thumb does not apply in a 30 limit area. It is to allow for speedo inaccuracies and speedo calibration should be accurate at 30mph.
Unc, couldn't you have pleaded that is was a HyaBUSa?
All the traffic cops that I have spoken to, here and in England have said the same thing. The 10% + does not apply in a 30 limit. What they do is; up
to 32mph in a 30 limit, is up to the officer's discretion. 33mph or above in a 30 limit is a mandatory prosecution.
Don't shoot the messenger.

I don't know if you get a photo automatically for those offences, but I know for a fact you do with council run bus-lane cameras..
From the CPS website:
Speed Enforcement
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has issued speed enforcement policy guidance, which suggests that enforcement will normally occur when
a driver exceeds the speed limit by a particular margin. This is normally 10 per cent over the speed limit plus 2 mph. It also sets guidelines for
when it would not be appropriate to issue a fixed penalty notice but to issue a summons instead (see below). Note that these are guidelines and that a
police officer has discretion to act outside of them providing he acts fairly, consistently and proportionately.
Speed limit: 20 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 24 mph
Summons: 35 mph
Speed limit: 30 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 35 mph
Summons: 50 mph
Speed limit: 40 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 46 mph
Summons: 66 mph
Speed limit: 50 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 57 mph
Summons: 76 mph
Speed limit: 60 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 68 mph
Summons: 86 mph
Speed limit: 70 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 79 mph
Summons: 96 mph
Again these are guidelines, as clearly stated in the caveat at the beginning.
OnN a side note ive successfully argued my way out of a fixed camera that claimed to catch me at 37, but when I measured the distance the two photos
showed me at with a 0.7 interval that I was infact traveling at 34, it was dropped, without going to court.
