it goes to.........

https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_register-or-login&em=xxxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com&txn_id=9AM37386GE6536826

so actually looks pretty genuine on the face of it. Just wants my username and password as it isnt pre-populating them into the link so makes me very suspicious

Forward fakes to spoof@paypal.com
Together we can help stop fraud.

If you think you’ve received a phishing email:

1. Forward the email to spoof@paypal.com
2. Delete the email

Be on the safe side
Go to the My Account tab and click History to check your transaction history for inaccuracies.

Did you mean to report a fake (spoof) website?

Paypal will always address you with your full name, not with your hotmail address.

Like this:
Dear Paul Simon Tiger, Paypal UK Marketing bla bla bla..

an NOT like this:
"Dear PTiger@hotmail.com, PayPal UK Marketing just sent you 1.00 GBP with PayPal.

Even tho in crisis, why take the risk for 1,- GBP only?

But you can send money thru paypal to anyone with email, just by typing it in. As stated above, logon via paypal.com, not the link, then see (if its there too) what more details you can find out.

It sounds like paypal are trying to srum up trade by giving people £1 to open an account.

Well believe it or not the email is actually genuine. I hadnt confirmed my email address on that Paypal account (its a 2nd account set up for building someone else's car) so not on my more usual email. This was resulting in it not pre-populating the login details into the login page. Just confirmed my email address by logging into Paypal directly and requesting a confirmation email be sent. Now i verified it they are sending me £1 apparently!!
