Domain/host/webspace...EH??
I'll apologise in advance for what could be the dumbest post ever but.........
a few years ago, I wanted a web address. I wanted to have a website and an email address that was whatever@blahblah.co.uk. I registered the details
with UK2 and they sent me all the bobbins that go with it. It cost me a penny.....then they wanted to know how much webspace I wanted...at £x per
kilo, or whatever they measure such thibgs. I got confused and hid behind the sofa.
I'm starting a new adventure, to dissipate the tedium of work, and I'd like to have an email addy that means something and perhaps a bit
of web space.
However, I know nothing about such things, as is probably obvious.........
So, what do I need and where do I get it!!
Cheers folks.

I use easily.co.uk you can put in any address you'd like and see if it's available. Purchasing is cheap and quick. You are, I think,
given a few web pages and can make up lots of email addresses and redirect emails too. They will also sell some basic web building software if you
want it. NTDWM but I've used them for years hassle free.

I have a few domains and email addresses with 1&1 they seem ok to me.
It's quite cheap and easy enough to get going.
Definitely not a dumb question though
I also believe that ChrisW on here could do it for you.

I've always used Orchard Hosting and have done so for about 8 years now. No problems and Tom at OH is
always helpful with any queries I have.
You can get your domain name from them and your webspace so it's all under one company and the prices are not bad at all.

webspace is essentially storage space on someone elses computer. The reason you pay for it is that these computers tend to be shiney new servers in
air conditioned rooms that are super reliable, with a brilliant internet connection.
This is important if you are going to have a shop or similar on there, as any down time effects your sales and reputation as a serious retailer.
The number of pages and images etc. effect the amount of space you require on their webserver, and therefore the price is scaled depending on how big
you think it will be. Then you have to consider if you want anything fancy like a shop or a forum, these take up varying amounts of space that change
regularly so its best to buy more than you need, rather than too little.
There are number of packages you can buy that makes running an online shop easier, and a forum too - but I suggest you do your own research ino it if
this is a route you are considering.
If the company you are going with is worth there salt they will happily explain all this, and any other costs over the phone, or via email.

use free space then. No need to pay unless you really really want to. Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) and ask if any is included in your
package. There is usually 50mb or so, which will be plenty for what your after.
Also there are sites that give away webspace, but they usually cover your page in ads to pay for it. still, worth a google rather than spend your hard
earned.

as above ^^ or if you dont want the ads over your site (i personally cant stand them) then your average costs are:
.co.uk domain name for 2 years = £8 (+ VAT)
basic webspace package for one year = £9.99 (+ VAT)
above prices are from Orchard Hosting. btw, OH are NTDWM.

Ok, so going to the url, it's all setup. You now need to start creating your site. You have 2 main options:
1) learn HTML and create your own pages
2) log in to your cPanel (you'll have been sent info re this in your account info email) and use the auto-installer for one of OH's site
builders.
For your email, again in cPanel, you can set it up in there. Just look for the mail management section. Pretty self-explanatory. If you have any
problems, drop me a U2U and we can organise a talk-through if you need.
