USB to Cat5 cable adapters .... they work!!
A while ago I posted that I needed an extra long USB cable to find out it's rather more complicated with USB cables.
SO .... I bought a pair of USB to Cat5 converts from Ebay. The printer USB cable plugs in one end, then 25 feets of standard network cable, then
another converter back to USB and into the PC.
And, guess what, they work perfectly! I was a little suprised I have to say, and they were quite cheap of Ebay.
It's nice when a plan comes together.
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

I used some of them recently, as I've helped a friend kit out his garage with some kit. We now have a wall-mounted, flexi-armed monitor and
keyboard/mouse in the garage, with the base unit securely inside the house.
I must say, it does help with autodata at your fingertips.
But yes, smart little bits of kit, and I'd definately recommend them!

not sure that the standards for Ethernet cable will allow for runs that long - 100m max if I recall

Whether extending USB cables like this works or not is much more down to the devices themselves than the actual cables. It all depends on the mode and
amount of bandwidth actually used, and how fussy the USB interface is. I've found that Nikon cameras will quite happily run over a cable length
of 40m or so, but some dye-sub printers won't even tolerate a proper 5m USB cable...
