iphone 3g on 3 network?

Has anyone here managed to get an iphone 3g working on the 3 network?
I was thinking of buying a 2nd hand one then unlocking it.
3 network internetis very cheap vs O2.
Cheers

I saw a advert for jailbreaking iphones on ebay the other day which said that it would work with any network including 3, but if you look on ebay for a iphone sim (they aren't particually expensive - from about £10) and they have unlimted free data , I have one myself and use it alot quicker than wap but not as good as wifi obviously but quite reliable and completly free!

hi drew, bear in mind when looking around that jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things.

Unlocking the 2g iphones occurred during the jailbreak.

The last article (a while ago!) stated that although some of the 3g features could be jailbroken they couldnt be unlocked easily.

Techies work quickly though so there may be more options available now.

Why not just on O2?

When you work it all out inc the cost of phone and cost over contract it isn't much cheaper and is a lot of hassle to try to use it on a different network. Also, some features wont work because you have to be O2 to have operator support...

You say internet is much cheaper through 3 than O2. With my contract it is unlimited data (subject to the fair usage thing but i use mine a lot, and never had a drama.)

My mate has unlocked his 3GS so he can use his payg 3 sim in it if he wants for mobile internet etc (£5 pm)

If you buy an O2 payg 3g sim and top it up with £10 you get unlimited internet access (and wifi) for 12 months . No need to top up again in that time.

They were going fo £2.99 on ebay but obviusly people have twigged to how good the deal is so they are now about £9.99

EXAMPLE

People have been buying them to put in their mobile broadband dongles and get 12 months for £10 but its hit and miss how long it lasts for as O2 can tell its not in an iphone and have been turning them off for some people.

I have jailbroke (is that a real word?) my iPhone 3g and installed an app that let me run on other networks. I've been using mine on T-mobile for around 6 months with no problems

Well, I bought an unlocked iphone from eBay. Now running it on the 3 network. Wow, what an amazing phone. It's great for keeping up with the forum, on the move. Highly recommended.

There's a reason for that... I'd rather power the laptop using a bicycle with no seat than use 3 again.

They called it 3 because that's the apparent IQ of the average technical support person.
