mate has just dropped a laptop on me saying that it doesn't work can i sort it out?

Anyway went to turn it on and was met with a notice saying

No Bootable Devises - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for set up utility. press f5 tp run onboard diagnostics?

Any ideas?

just ran the onboard diagnostics to be greeted with the following message

Error code 0147
Msg: Error Code 2000 - 0147
Msg: 0:Optical drive BIST -- S[indle test failed.
The given error code and message can be used by DELL Technical support to help diagnose the problem.
Do you want to continue testing? Yes, No ot Retry?

If will boot off a boot CD then it is worth worth opening up the drive bay and checking the conector is in properly but if both HD connector and memory modules are firmly in place but can't see the hard disk then it is likely the minimum damage is the hard disk has physically crashed particularly if it was running when dropped ---

As said before, this error code means the OPTICAL drive has failed and needs to be replaced. Earlier Inspirons would cease booting if they failed on the spindle test. I would just unplug the cd drive, change the boot order and run it without a drive, or get an external one if it is a must.
