E-Sata Storage Device
Hi guys, I'm after some help. I've just purchased an e-SATA HDD enclosure and have put my old HDD into it, with a view to (hopefully)
retrieve photos and video. The device is recognised in 'Devices and Printers' but I don't seem able to access it and it
doesn't appear in 'Computer'
I don't seem to be able to write to it either, so at this point I don't know if theres actually anything on it, or if it's been
wiped clean when my old PC packed in.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It could have been allocated a drive letter (D for instance) that's already in use.
Right click My Computer - Manage - Disk Management.
Does it appear there? You can allocate another drive letter by right clicking it and choosing change drive letter (or something similar!)

Phil,
I take it that you're OK with delving inside your case - if so then hook up your drive as a slave, go into your BIOS and you should see the
drive detected. Set the boot order of your hard drives. The computer wont try and boot from this drive but it will be recognised.
You may need some beer afterwards though!

In Windows 7 the disk management screen is split. It doesn't appear on the list at the top but it is shown in the lower half of the screen as
'Disk 1 Removable (E)' but it says underneath 'No Media'
I don't really want to open up the case and hook it up as a slave unless it's absolutely necessary to determine whether there's any
files on it.

Does your enclosure take sata 2 or 3? i.e. 1.5Gb/s or 3Gb/s - you may have to set a jumper on your drive to wind it down to 1.5.

It is the 1.5Gb/s version.
Could it have something to do with the different OS? Current OS is Windows 7, old OS was XP.

Tried connecting it to a PC running windows XP and although the PC can see it, when I try to open it I get 'Insert Disc'
When I try searching through the search companion it says 'This folder is not indexed' but there doesn't seem to be an option to
index it.
I hate trying to work with PC's when I can't fully understand them. Aaaarrrgghh........

Sorry Phil - been away from the machine.......to much gaming to be done
What is the make/model of your motherboard and the enclosure that you have the drive in?

Problem solved. I found another lead hiding in the box which also needed connecting to the HDD and PCB to give it power. Took me the best part of the
day to realise this but once connected, managed to access all my old files on the HDD Thanks for the advice though.
