Phone USB to PC problem

I got a Samsung Omnia II for Christmas. It is lovely. Today it won't connect to my PC. The PC says the device is not recognised and has malfunctioned. I've tried rebooting both the phone and the PC which has had no effect. I've also tried reinstalling the driver but without recognising the device, the PC doesn't want to know. What can I do to get it going?

Sounds like it's not working in storage mode. Does it have an SD card in it?

Different starting point but this might offer an explanation:

My Sony one has a Sony plug at the phone end (as opposed to a mini-usb or something) and when this happened to me turns out it was a bit of gunk blocking one of the pins.. Could be a little dirt in the socket somewhere
