Convert AVI to MPEG or MP4

I've just used my new ebay videocam to do some driving vids, and they are mahoosive - c. 100MB for a minute or so in AVI format.

What free converters have people used to reduce the size? I guess I am looking for conversion to MPEG or maybe MP4 files.

TIA

Simon

Hmmm - tried that one and it doesn't work. I get the error "Can't convert " and then the file name...

However, this one does work (for me):
