email client grief

I'm trying to get email on an new PC at home. I had Outlook working, now its come up with an error and just wont fire up. I've tried re-installing etc and it wont work.

I've tried Thunderbird and got nowhere with that, just wont send and receive.

So I'm now trying the Opera one. I've put in my POP 3 and username and password and server address, can send emails now, but still not receive them.

My username and password are obviously correct as I can send emails. My incoming and outgoing server names are the same and correct, so thats right. And I can't think what else it could be.

Could it be the assigned Ports? They are set at 110 in and 25 out?

Ports look correct, but incoming and outgoing servers are often different.

Mine are post.demon.co.uk port 25 (SMTP send)
and pop3.demon.co.uk port 110 (POP3 receive).

What ISP are you with?

Jasper...if you are with NTL/Virgin, some of us are having major problems ...

I have not fully sorted mine out yet, so I am probably 'losing' loads.....

They have made big changes in the name of progress, but in fact have gone back to the dark ages ......
I am tearing my hair out with it, so much so, it makes me feel like I want to ditch Virgin.....

It's also worth pinging your pop3 and smtp server to see where they're pointing. I had a similar problem at work before and it turned out a nasty had diverted all my settings to a website in Korea

If Thunderbird didn't send a receive and everything appear correct it would like be the security settings.

I did get Outlook working fine, so I know the ping was ok and everything was working. My email is hosted by a small private company who do my business one, and the incoming and outgoing server names are the same and correct and are POP3. I've set them up loads of times in the last 10 years I've been using them, and always without a problem.

My other email address is working fine on my other home machine, so things should be fine with Virgin.

I've turned off all the security settings on the options as my email hosters don't use it.

Hmmmmmm

Ah .... ok....

In case you haven't been 'migrated' yet (Virgin/NTL) .. it will be happening ... they are hoping to roll out the rest by June.....

Some of my accounts have been migrated some have not, which is causing no end of hassle with my email client, Thunderbird.

They are migrating us all to Google/gmail, although our email addies will stay the same.
This also means that largely, it will now be more of a 'web-based mail' ... so once the emails have been downloaded to one pc/email client, it wont download to another unless you alter something in the account settings of your email client ....

With some, it has happened seamlessly, others like myself.....have had no end of problems.....
None of the settings VM have stated, or have 'downloaded' work ...

It is now time to get my own email domain...

Now...... who is that chap from Netrino?

Some ISPs just don't take running email servers seriously enough.
Our business email streams all come in through either Zen or Plusnet email servers both are rock solid in 7 years and 5 years respectively I can't recall a single problem, and the spam and malware filtering on both actually works.

It's because of this sort of nonsense I now have my own email server.
