Java and Firefox

I recently got AV antivirus scareware on my XP lappy which malwarebytes couldn't deal with and eventually did a full reinstall of XP plus all the programs I could remember. Latest version of Firefox installed fine and I followed up with flashplayer, adobe reader, and java update.
Firefox then informed me java is incompatible and uninstalled it next time it started. But I can't listen to Radio 4 online. I get a message to enable java. But in firefox, tools, options, content the java box is ticked as if java is OK.
Tried reinstalling java and firefox just uninstalls it each time and then tells me I need to enable it. A groundhog day loop.

Anyone able to suggest anything? What am I missing?

Still stuck and it fell off the front page in an hour last night. One of the effects of the new layout.
