Program being rude and needs attention NOW

Here's the problem. I'll have some programs doing things (like extracting from a zipped file) and while it's running I'll do something else, like posting here. Thing is most of the time once that thing is done it pops right up and often means I've typed half a post into winrar, which is annoying at least and downright rude at worst. Sometimes these programs are really polite and just flash orange on the taskbar, does anyone know how I can make all programs do this, or even what it is I'm asking for (because going into google and asking "how to stop programs popping up" comes up with irrelevant pap as usual"

The geek speak for this kind of bad behaviour is "grabbing focus" or "stealing focus"

On windows the worst thing is it's a deliberate choice by an application writer to enable it as it's off by default.
You might get lucky and be able to force it back again. See:

Only sure way is to run a second copy of your OS in a virtual machine....

It doesn't do it all the time, only when I'm typing...
