Picture Problems

I have a strange issue with pictures I have saved off websites. They open fine in image editing software, gimp paint etc.
However when I view them in the folder or windows picture viewer the pictures are elongated horizontally. Any ideas how to stop it? Its recently happened on both the PCs i use regularly one windows 7 with IE and one is Vista with Firefox

I just saved one of the jpgs as a gif and it seems to work ok, if it is copyright protection its not really protected at all. Its just a minor inconvenience.
