Boolean enquiries

I tried something tonight I hadn't done for years

I put an enquiry into google which didn't give the results I expected. Years ago (I really mean years) you could put 'estate car NOT volvo' and you would get info on all estate cars except Volvos - Now you get only Volvo estate cars.

Has the internet forgotten how to do this, or am I doing it wrong now?

I was using windows 3.1 the last time I tried it on a search engine called Alta Vista which still exists but no longer works with AND-OR-NOT enquiries.

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

the advanced search option on google will allow you to do this, and it is then possible to see how it works,... I seem to recall the use of a minus (-) sign for NOT

edit try

hthnot volvo

try " swedish estate car -volvo"

Also Google search bar delivers very different results from google.co.uk home page.

Yeah, "estate car -Volvo" should do it, it's how I've been doing it for the last 15 years anyway

Recently google has been autocompleting my searches, even if I type in the full words of what I'm looking for it will change them to something more popular and often completely different. Very irritating.

Try clicking the cog at the top right. Choose "Search Settings"
Go down to "Google Instant" and click the "Do not use Google Instant" button and "Save Preferences"

Should stop the auto-complete.

Personally I don't mind the influx of Volvo to this country as long as the work pull their weight and don't line on benefits. ;-)
